About the Center

Frank Pierce Recreation Center is located in Bartlett Park, a 133-acre greenspace with Salt Creek - a shoreline fishing location and the adjacent St. Petersburg Tennis Center. Frank Pierce Recreation Center has a long standing tradition of youth activities: camps, sporting facilities and playground equipment as well as classes and activities for all ages.

History of the Center

A native of Augusta, Georgia, Frank Pierce completed his primary and secondary education in Georgia. He received his bachelor of science from South Carolina State University and a master of science from New York University.

Pierce came to St. Petersburg in 1957 as one of the original faculty members at Gibbs Junior College. He was head of the science department, coach of the basketball team and director of student activities. When integration brought the merger of Gibbs and Saint Petersburg Junior College, he went to the college’s Clearwater campus to teach biology.

The list of his civic activities is a long one. He has been cochairman of the Community Alliance, chairman of Pinellas Opportunity Council and the Urban Development Corporation. He was a member of Pinellas County Charter Commission, St. Petersburg Planning Commission, Pinellas County Transportation Authority and the Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. He was vice president and board member of United Way, a board member of the NAACP, Community Services Council and Dean Mohr Plaza. He was a district leader of the Pinellas Democratic Party, a president of the Community Democratic Club, an arbitrator for the Citizens Dispute Settlement Program, chairman of the Trustee Board of Bethel Metropolitan Baptist Church and a life member and past president of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

He made two unsuccessful campaigns for the Pinellas County School Board and worked for many Democratic candidates from Franklin Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter. His legacy of valuable contributions to his community will forever live on.
