Weeden Island Punctated Ceramic
Vessel Sherd

This Weeden Island Punctated rim sherd is a classic example of this ceramic type. It dates to the Weeden Island period, ca. AD 400-900 and is a small piece of what would have been a large pot that was likely used in a mortuary context. The punctated design is made by pressing the edge of a pointed tool into the wet clay before firing.

The Weeden Island pottery series, which includes several different types was originally defined by Gordon Willey for the Florida Gulf Coast and was named after the Weeden Island site, 8Pi1, in Pinellas County, Florida.

This sherd is unprovenienced, meaning that it lacks any information about what site it is from. This decorative sherd is used as part of a teaching collection to allow hands-on study and analyses of archaeological materials.

3D Model of Kuttler Mound

A Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) survey was performed at the Kuttler Mound, St. Petersburg, Florida. The mound is part of a larger archaeological complex called Bayshore Homes, and is located adjacent to Abercrombie Park. The City of St. Petersburg purchased the parcel for preservation and this survey helped understand how the mound looked before a house was built on it in 1939.

Perforated Ceramic Disc

This perforated ceramic disk was recovered from the Abercrombie Park Midden in St. Petersburg, Florida. The midden is part of the large Bayshore Homes Site Complex, which was occupied from AD 225-1390 during the Manasota, Weeden Island, and Safety Harbor periods. Although the exact function of these artifacts is not known, they may have served as spindle whorls for spinning or twisting plant fibers into cordage or twine.

Abercrombie Park
Historic Sign

At Abercrombie Park in St. Petersburg, Florida, there is a circular embankment that is all that remains of a small prehistoric mound. The sand and shell mound was originally about 4 feet high and 58 feet in diameter. Fill from the mound was excavated and used for local street construction in the 1920s. This sign, salvaged from a nearby house lot, once acknowledged the mound’s location.

Abercrombie Park Mound

Abercrombie Park in St. Petersburg, Florida, contains mounds and shell middens that are part of a large pre-Columbian village occupied by Native Americans between AD 140 and 565, during the early Weeden Island period and again during the early Safety Harbor period, between AD 890 and 1390.

This circular embankment is all that is left of a small sand and shell mound that was originally about 4 feet high and 58 feet in diameter. Fill from the mound was excavated and used for local streets in the 1920s.

Using terrestrial laser scanning technologies (terrestrial LiDAR), the remnants of the mound were documented, providing a digital reconstruction that is accurate to within millimeters. The vertical dimension of this terrain model has been exaggerated for better visualization and for 3D printing. This model is 3D print verified and can be shared and used freely for educational and research purposes.

Shell Sinker or Plummet

This artifact from Abercrombie Park is made from a gastropod columella (central axis of a spiral shell), and would have been used as a sinker or plummet. It is a common artifact at coastal archaeological sites of all periods like those in St. Petersburg’s parks. They were attached to fishing lines or nets, although nicely made examples and those made of exotic materials (metamorphic rock, copper, and rock crystal) may have been used for personal adornment.
