Recontruction of the Pinellas Point Mound

This 3D reconstruction shows the full size and shape of the Pinellas Point Mound at Indian Mound Park in St. Petersburg, Florida prior to partial destruction in 1929. Data used to create this reconstruction include terrestrial laser scanning survey data collected in 2014 along with survey details from the c. 1880 S.T. Walker map that was made prior to site alteration. This reconstruction shows that the site had an extensive ramp feature pointing to the south, as well as a distinctive “T” shape. The portion of the site to the west of the ramp is largely missing today.

Decorative Ceramic Sherd

This Tucker Ridge Pinched ceramic sherd is from the Tierra Verde Mound in Pinellas County and dates to the Weeden Island period. This sherd is likely from a flattened-globular bowl with an incurving rim. As the name implies, the vertical ridges are made by pinching the wet clay before firing.

Pinellas Point Mound

This ramped, temple mound is smaller in size than its original construction. In 1929 a neighboring house to the west was constructed and removed a portion of the site.

The site was mapped in 1880 by S.T. Walker showing its full extent and ramp feature to the south. In 1992, Dr. Robert Austin, directing a field school from Eckerd College, revisted and produced a topographic map of the site to show present-day configuration.

In 2014 a terrestrial LiDAR survey was undertaken, and along with aerial LiDAR and GPS, provides a comprehensive look at the site, including sectional and volumetric analysis.
